Abstract

Up until now rainwater catchment and storage systems have not been widely used in Brazil's semiarid Northeast. This book explains a technology of cistern constuction still unknown in the Northeast. It describes in great detail the construction of a water container made of cement mortar, reinforced with wire mesh and galvanized wire, using a cast, which can be disposed of during the first construction phase. The advantage: the local population is already familiar with this construction method, since it is similar to the construction of a mud house.

What makes this technology stand out is the fact that cisterns build with it hardly ever leak. Occasional leaks caused, for example, by including some wood pieces or seeds in the mortar, can be easily fixed. The tecnology of the ferrocement cistern can be useful for small as well as big cistern building programs.

In addition this book contains important informations about the use of cement and the availability an consumption of water in the semarid reagion of Brazil.
